QAF

it is FAQ with the letters in the wrong order, which is honest, because none of these were asked frequently. some were never asked at all. i just knew.

can i upload an image?

yes, now. this page used to say no, at some length, and the reason it gave was that the day this place accepts one png it is a photo album: first a thumbnail, then a gallery, then a video, and one morning i am explaining to a hosting company what exactly is in folder 14.

that worry was the right worry. it is also the thing the limits are for. png, jpeg, gif and webp, two megabytes each, counted against the same room your writing is counted against. no video, no gallery, no albums, no resizing. a picture is an entry like any other: it has a name, an address, a date, and it can be taken down.

what has not changed is the point of the place. this is somewhere to keep text, and pictures are here so a page can have one in it, not so the page can be one.

what does a picture keep about me?

less than it came with. most phones write the time, the model and often the exact spot you were standing into every photo, and that is taken out when the picture arrives. only the picture and which way up it goes are kept.

it is done without opening the picture itself. every one of these formats keeps its notes in labelled blocks beside the image, so the notes can be left behind without ever decoding a pixel, which is the thing this place would rather not do to files strangers send it.

if you want every byte kept, there is a box on the form for that. a gif is kept as it is either way: the format has nowhere to put a location.

who is to blame for what i publish?

you. completely and only you.

not me, and absolutely not the elephant. he approves everything on feeling alone and has never read one line of anything. if you put something up that brings you trouble, that conversation is between you and the trouble.

the keeper can take anything down and will, when it is the sort of thing that makes a hosting company write an email that starts with "we regret".

can i host a real website here?

a small one, yes. an index.html, a stylesheet, a couple of pages that link to each other. that is a site and it always was.

if yours needs a build step, a framework and a deployment pipeline, it does not need bimbooo. it needs a salary.

why is it invite only?

because one person reads every request by hand, and that person is also the support department, the design team, the sysadmin and the elephant's assistant.

it is not exclusivity. it is arithmetic.

do you count anything about me?

there is a number next to each thing saying how many times it was opened. that is the whole analytics department. no cookie follows you from a page to another, because the pages people publish live on their own address and never see one.

what if my page is ugly?

good. the web went quiet when every page started looking like the same three templates. make it ugly with intention. put the text in a colour that should not work. nobody is grading this.

is the elephant real?

he is a coworker. the details are in about.

can i leave and take everything with me?

yes, and without asking. there is a download on your settings page that hands back everything you wrote in one zip, and below it a way to delete your account and everything on it for good. nobody is kept here by making it hard to go.

the name is kept, though, and only the name, as a fingerprint that tells nobody anything unless they already know the name. not to hold on to you: so that nobody else can move into your old address and start talking to the people who still follow it. your account has the rest.
